The cinematic development of modernity is a complex process: — after all, it is necessary to create an exciting and intense action based on collisions, often devoid of external and habitual drama, it is necessary to reveal the characters of people in the daily routine of their work and everyday life. We understand that this daily routine is far from idyllic — we are not talking about conflict-free sitting on the jelly banks of milk rivers. But we also understand something else — the conflicts and complexities of everyday life are more difficult to process cinematically. In order for them to be organically included in the film, it is necessary to understand their deep essence, the circumstances that gave rise to them, the dialectic of their movement into tomorrow.
When we turn to the problems of political film in Soviet cinematography, it is obvious that we should first of all talk about works on a modern theme, showing our scientific and economic competition with capitalism as the most important front of the class struggle in the modern world, about works showing the life and work of the builders of communism in the context of the worldwide struggle of socialism against capitalism.
Any fruitful study of the problems of modern political film is impossible without taking into account the experience of Soviet cinematography in developing the theme of revolution, in the cinematic embodiment of the collisions of ideological struggle. It seems that such films of previous years as "The Great Citizen" can give a lot to the modern understanding of a political film.
Of course, films that directly address the phenomena and problems of international politics, the liberation movement of the working people of capitalist countries, and the struggle for the unity of the world communist movement are also of great importance for Soviet cinema of our days.
Due to the widespread distribution of political films, some foreign film critics have now developed such sentiments: as they turn to politics, cinema forgets about the study of human character and the search for language and style. Meanwhile, not only the practice of Soviet cinema, but also the best foreign films shown recently on the Moscow festival screen, show that realistically embodied problems of politics do not obscure a person, but help to better understand him in all the diversity of his interests and concerns. There is also no devaluation of style: cinema is now intensively searching for a new simplicity in talking about complex things. No wonder that at the festival discussion "Cinema in the struggle for social progress" it was specifically emphasized: without becoming an audience, a political film, a social film cannot achieve its goals. Although, the participants in the discussion said, such paradoxes exist: it happens that a political film that addresses its thought and theme to the most democratic audience remains an absurd "thing in itself", since the conversation in it is conducted in a language inaccessible to the mass audience. The fate of the films of some left—wing filmmakers is particularly dramatic, embodying anti—bourgeois ideas in artistic forms that, according to the plan, should themselves become expressions of struggle and rebellion; the modernist constructions used in such cases often distort the ideas of the film and, in any case, weaken their influence on the audience.
Observing the processes taking place in Soviet and world cinema, it is easy to see that recently the search for a synthesis of linguistic and stylistic discoveries of modern cinema and the achievements of poetic cinema of the silent period has intensified, of course, transformed accordingly.
